Until last year, researchers had identified 31 mammal species in this biodiversity conservation area. Recent studies by Biology students from the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences at the Universidad de Antioquia have confirmed at least 43 species thriving in this tropical rainforest. 

Morten Meldal, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, visited the Universidad de Antioquia, where he engaged with students, professors, and researchers from both undergraduate and graduate programs. The Danish chemist and University of Copenhagen professor toured the University Research Headquarters (SIU), the Extension building, and the Faculty of Medicine. His visit was part of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative, supported by the Nobel Foundation and AstraZeneca.  

57 years after One Hundred Years of Solitude introduced the world to Gabriel García Márquez’s extraordinary vision. After securing his place in Latin American literature, the novel has finally made its way to the screen. Two members of the UdeA University community contributed to the production. Susana Morales Cañas, studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance, portrayed the young Úrsula. Diego Calderón Franco, a biologist and avid birdwatcher, recorded the sounds of birds. He also captured the calls of other animals and the ambient noises that helped bring the mythical world of Macondo to life.  

The Universidad de Antioquia and Ecohome signed a licensing agreement to commercialize two patents developed by researchers at the Alma Mater. These innovations originate from a refined extract of the Sapindus saponaria tree, known for its benefits in skin care and treatment of skin diseases. This accomplishment results from 18 years of research by Pecet and the Organic Chemistry of Natural Products group.   

The life-saving drug Leukopop 2T brings new hope to leukemia patients who have not responded to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or other treatments. Beyond its recent patent approval by the SIC for UdeA researchers, this breakthrough paves the way for advanced therapeutic options for leukemia and other forms of cancer. 

Biologists from the Universidad de Antioquia have identified two new species in Colombia: the lizard Echinosaura Embera and the moth Tigridania Magdalenae. This discovery enriches the understanding of the country’s biological diversity and carries the UdeA seal.  

Are you unsure how to dispose of expired or leftover medications? Tossing them in the trash or flushing them down the drain isn’t safe. These drugs qualify as hazardous waste, and improper disposal can endanger health and the environment.

A professor and two Master’s students in Biology from the Universidad Distrital in Bogotá discovered that this species belonged to a different botanical genus than previously thought. Their research also revealed distinct characteristics that set it apart from others, confirming it as a newly identified species. Two specimens of this tree grow on the Medellín campus of University City. 

A key takeaway from the meeting of rectors from Colombia’s four huge public universities—the National University of Colombia (UNAL), the Universidad de Antioquia, the Industrial University of Santander, and the University of Valle—was the need to enhance collaboration and dialogue. The discussion focused on establishing committees and forums to improve the quality, accessibility, infrastructure, and funding of higher education institutions (HEIs) while strengthening efforts to support local communities and Colombia’s most underserved regions.

The Museum of the Universidad de Antioquia (MUUA) and the Cisneros Fontanals Foundation for the Arts (CIFO) present an exhibition of emerging artists featuring a performance and installation that challenge traditional views of the female body and territory. Chilean artist Paula Coñoepan Acuña showcases El secreto del ají (The Secret of Chili Pepper) on the museum’s ground floor until April 25, 2025.

Nearly half of UdeA’s 3,200 graduate students receive tuition exemptions, while over 200 benefit from scholarships and forgivable loans. The university provides these opportunities to help professionals further their academic careers.
