Lennin Flórez-Leiva, MSc

Staff Position:

Leader of Research group and Principal Investigator

Research Interests: I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science from the University del Magdalena in Colombia. As part of my degree, I studied the effect of sedimentation in the population of macroalgae/seaweed and its influence on coral reefs. I recently completed a BSc in which I experimentally examined the population dynamics of macroalgae, herbivory, recruitment, and coral bleaching, in the Colombian Caribbean. Other research experience that I have include terrestrial and aquatic botany (e.g Macrophytes). I have also gained extensive experience in culture, reproductive and ecology of algae temperate zones (i.e Chile). My Master degree interests include chemical compounds relevant to climate and various oceanic environments, including tropical zones (such as coral reefs). As an oceanographer, my principal interest has been in the role that marine micro/macroalgae play in the production of gases of climatic relevance, such as dimethylsulfide. I am particularly interested in the algal degradation of DMS(P).We are currently working in estuaries in Colombia, mainly understanding the biogeochemical processes that modulate these.

Research Interests: Marine biogeochemistry, trace elements and phytoplanktonI received my bachelor in Marine Biology degree (2001 – 2007) from UACh (Universidad Austral de Chile), period in which I worked in biological oceanography of the fjord region studying the trophic ecology of zooplankton and its role in the biological pump. Furthermore, I worked with zooplankton and phytoplankton dynamic in the Antarctic Peninsula (2007-2010).
In 2010 I moved to Norway to develop master studies in Environmental Chemistry (NTNU) (Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2010-2012). There I conducted research on trace metals and phytoplankton with focus on the Iron cycle and its interactions with the nitrogen cycle. In 2013 is started my PhD also at NTNU to continue research on Iron with both large scale survey approach to study the natural variability as well as laboratory experiments to test iron bioavailability to different phytoplankton species.

Research Interests: I am a doctor in marine science, teaching and research with category of associated Professor in the Oceanographic Institute of Venezuela, Oriente University. I have been working in various research areas, which include fisheries, marine and river pollution by heavy metals and nutrients in the ocean system. My study area encompasses coastal areas, coastal lagoons, rivers, estuaries, wetlands and rivers. I have worked in the oxygen minimum zone of Cariaco Project in Venezuela, which develop my thesis and dissertations in the area of nutrients and carbon system.

Research Interests: My main research interests are related to the upper-layer ocean dynamics and its interaction with the atmosphere in tropical and subtropical regions. To do so, I have developed excellent skills in data analysis methods and the manipulation of large volumes of information, and I am expert in several programming languages needed in Geoscience such as Matlab™, R™, Phyton™,and Fortran™. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Oceanography from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso in Chile. For my thesis I studied the spatial and temporal variability of oceanic internal waves off Coquimbo (30°S) and Iquique (21°S), Northern Chile. Recently, I did a Master’s Degree in Engineering of Hydraulic Resources, in the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellín, were I investigated the Seasonal and Interannual Variability of the Mixed Layer Heat Budget in the Caribbean Sea by means of high-resolution reanalysis modelled data and satellite observations. At present, I am a Doctorate’s candidate in the Engineering – Hydraulic Resources Program of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellín, were I am studying the air-ocean interaction processes occurring in the Caribbean upwelling system off La Guajira, northern Colombia, at different temporal scales of variability. Other research experience during the past years includes the evaluation of the potential of ocean energy resources (currents and ocean thermal energy conversion/OTEC) to produce electricity in Colombia; the implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) to hindcast the ocean circulation in the Caribbean Sea, and the statistical characterization of extreme wind and waves events in the Caribbean Sea.

Current research: My research is focused in two main lines: 1) Optics, structure and variability of the offshore Columbia River plume. The Columbia River plume is advected southward and offshore during spring-summer influencing the coastal ocean off Oregon. Observations from autonomous underwater gliders, ocean color remote sensing, and moorings are used to study these mesoscale plume events at multiple temporal scales of variability; 2) Horizontal scales of variability in the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) and surface mixed layer off northern Chile. Seaglider observations, in combination with satellite data (SST, color, wind, SSH), are used to study the cross-shore hydrographic and bio-optical variability off Iquique, northern Chile.
