UdeA music student plays for Cirque du Soleil

Juan David Pavas, a UdeA School of Arts student has joined world-renowned Cirque du Soleil, one of the world’s most famous live spectacles. His singing and acting skills as well as his ability to play instruments such as tuba and double bass earned him a place in the famous Canadian entertainment company.

After attending a Cirque du Soleil audition which included about 150 participants, Pavas, a music student at the UdeA School of Arts, managed to join the cast of Cirque du Soleil ‘s production Luzia.

Previously, he was part of the University Symphonic Band and UdeA Big Band as well as other local bands. Since June 2016, he has participated in about 227 Cirque du Soleil shows. Along with 57 other artists, Pavas will embark on a tour of the United States, Europe and Australia in November.

“When I arrived in Montreal, I realized that we Colombians have plenty of talents and skills. We are proactive, open minded people.  It was quite motivating since we often underestimate ourselves,” Pavas said.

During his vacation, Pavas visited his native Medellín and Universidad de Antioquia where he played tuba and encouraged his classmates to believe in their abilities and make the most of their university experience.

“This enriching experience made me realize how much I learned at UdeA. I didn't need to learn anything else, in fact, I brought plenty of knowledge from my studies at UdeA. The University opened up the world to me,” he said.

Francisco Londoño, dean of the UdeA School of Arts, highlighted the high level of preparedness of the School of Art graduates as the vast majority of them have achieved national and international recognition.

“Graduates of the School of Arts are increasingly being admitted to graduate programs abroad. In addition, the UdeA School of Arts has produced many notable alumni including solo musicians, singers and guitarists who work for renowned European bands", Londoño said.

Inspired by the cultural richness of Mexico, Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA will kick off a 15-month world tour.
